Predicting EV charger degradation from OCPP telemetry

Chargers already stream their own vital signs. This work turns that stream into an early warning.

The idea

EV charging infrastructure degrades quietly until it fails loudly. But every charger speaking OCPP already emits a telemetry stream: MeterValues, StatusNotification and more. This work extracts degradation signals from that existing stream, so an operator needs no new hardware to see trouble coming.

Charger MeterValues StatusNotification Extractor alert threshold drift score over time

Drift rises long before failure. Crossing the threshold is the early warning.

Tool first, then the paper

The open source tool, evse-drift, shipped before the paper, so the method was usable before it was citable. Validation in this first paper is simulation based. A second study is under way: field validation on an instrumented charger, with a power analyser on the AC input providing ground truth.
